A digital totem is a vertical screen, free-standing or wall-mounted, placed in a busy spot to welcome, guide or advertise. It is one of the most visible forms of the digital sign: portrait format, at eye level, hard to miss.
What is a digital totem?
It is a standalone portrait screen, often slim, placed at a company reception, in a hotel lobby, a mall, a station concourse or at a trade show. It plays a welcome message, a map, a schedule, offers, on a loop and up to date. The totem is the fixture; digital signage is what runs on it.
Totem vs interactive kiosk: the difference?
A totem shows content the visitor looks at. An interactive kiosk adds a touch screen so they navigate themselves: map, directory, catalogue, ticketing. With MisterSignage, the software drives the full-screen display; interactivity depends on the web content you show.
Where to place a digital totem?
At crossing points: company reception (visitors, wayfinding), hotel (welcome, activities), retail and malls (offers, wayfinding), events (schedule, floor plan). A totem at the entrance grabs attention where it is strongest.
Which screen for a totem?
Three routes, from simplest to most pro:
- Portrait smart TV on a stand — the cheapest: a TV rotated vertically on a totem mount, ideal indoors to start;
- Dedicated digital totem — a vertical screen built into a slim enclosure, pro finish, for a reception or lobby;
- Outdoor totem — for open air (forecourt, drive-through): high brightness + weatherproofing (see outdoor digital signage).
In every case the screen runs in portrait and the content is set to the vertical format.
What to show on a totem?
- Welcome — a greeting, the name of the visitor or expected group;
- Wayfinding — map, floors, directions to rooms (see the lobby directory);
- Offers and new arrivals — in retail or malls;
- Schedule — times, speakers, floor plan at events;
- QR code — to WiFi, the catalogue or a contact form.
How do you control it?
Like any screen: the totem (a vertical smart TV or a free-standing screen) opens the player address, shows a code, you link it to content and update it remotely. You start with 1 screen free for life. See pricing, the office use, or the use cases.
